The Art of Manifestation: Magic, Myths & Methods… Does it Really Work?

If, like me, you’ve become (regrettably) absorbed into the world of TikTok, you’ll know that ‘manifestation’ has become a bit of a buzzword on the app. In a society characterised by chaos and uncertainty, people are increasingly turning to the Laws of Attraction to seek what they desire.
Whilst the concept of manifestation has been around since the 19th century, the practise has recently been labelled as a ‘cool new trend‘, gaining in popularity over the last six months on social media, especially TikTok. Confused but intrigued, I decided to delve deeper into the spiritual subculture of the app (also known as #WitchTok) to learn more.
Alongside manifestation and the Laws of Attraction, the ‘witchcraft’ community share videos of spells, potions, hexes, rituals… you name it, they’ve got it. Surprisingly, #WitchTok has an impressive three billion views, with some videos on manifestation attracting over one million viewers. Some users explain how to manifest yourself a relationship, many seek to ‘prove’ that it works, whilst others share the best methods, tips and so on.
I stumbled across Olivia Brown (@__oliveee__) who has a collective 2.9 million likes on her videos discussing the Laws of Attraction and manifestation; “the Law of Attraction is the idea that our thoughts create our reality… According to quantum physics, everything in the world is made up out of atoms. Atoms all vibrate at a certain frequency, like energy attracts like energy,” Olivia explains.
She continues: “As humans, our vibration is based on how we feel. Happy mood is vibrating at a high frequency, sad [mood] is a lower frequency. You attract experiences based on the level that you were vibrating.”
To simplify, you attract the energy you give off; radiate bad vibes, then you receive bad vibes, and vice versa.
So, with the Laws of Attraction applied, “you can attract anything in life as long as you match it vibrationally“; in order to attract, you have to change your vibrational frequency to match what you wish to obtain. Manifesting is simply speaking something into existence by making a circumstance out of nothing. This can truly be anything: from wealth, to a relationship, a job or even changes to your physical features.
But how do I do it?
After grasping the basic concepts, I explored further into the practise. Here are some steps I have put together using advice from the top manifestation gurus:
1. Gain control and clear thoughts.
Firstly, clear your mind and ask yourself “is this really what I want?” Hone your focus and be as precise as possible on what you are trying to manifest. Let go of the negativity surrounding what you’re trying to achieve. Meditate.
2. Believe you already have what you want.
Once you are clear on your manifestation and why you want it, start believing that you already have it. This can be done by visualisation.
Imagine the feeling that your manifestation will bring to you. Start the affirmations and believe in your manifestation. Avoid obsessing over it, though, as this creates tension.
3. Integrate your manifestation into your routine.
This can be done by journaling, meditating, writing down or visualising your manifestation. There are multiple rituals that have blown up recently, including the popular 3x6x9 method.
To do this, you simply write down your goal three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon and nine times in the evening. There are so many different methods, but they all reach a similar goal; each is designed to help you align with the frequency of your intentions, through making it your ‘vibrational focus’. After all, energy attracts energy.
4. Radiate POSITIVITY!
Be grateful and think about what you already have. Show gratitude whilst you manifest. Act as if you already have everything you want. If you exude doubt and negativity, you will attract negative experiences; ‘the universe is a self-reflection of how you feel’.

With most spiritual practises associated with witchcraft and New Age movements, there is often a great deal of criticism and scepticism attached. Critics of manifestation claim that radiating positivity is simply not enough to make your desires come true; your subconscious is aware that you don’t have what you want, for example, even though you are acting as if you do.
Doubters of the practise claim that habits will subtly change, only because you are so desperate for your manifestation to become a reality. You work hard, ‘make your own luck’ and there has to be a change in circumstance in order for life to improve. There is no external ‘power’ controlling your aspirations – you get what you want by working hard. Adopting a positive mindset just makes it easier.
Naturally, hardcore believers of manifestation will clap back at critics and claim that manifestation does not work for those who exude negativity. It could be argued that the above perspective only works for materialistic manifestations. Many people attempt to attract things that are out of their control, regardless of ‘hard work’ or ‘habits’; examples include: manifesting a text from an estranged lover, changes to your appearance or even manifesting to appear in someone’s dream.
Many claim that it’s just a huge coincidence, whilst others believe it is an ‘act of God’; the debate is never ending.
As we continue to trudge through this global pandemic, manifesting might just be the perfect practise to help you focus on your goals. Even if it’s not for you, there are so many beneficial elements of the process that can be applied to everyday life; adopting a more positive outlook can improve general wellbeing, as well as encouraging productivity and mindfulness.
After all, we could all use a little more positivity at the moment.
