Creative Collections Digital Advent Calendar Day Seven: 'It's Not That Boring' by Emily Gunn

Emily Gunn is a freelance film critic and writer whose written for Girls on Top and Jumpcut Online - in addition to running her own website www.itsnotthatboring.com

EG: "Reciting in East London, I started It's Not That Boring after witnessing a revolutionary documentary called 'This Changes Everything' featuring celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, and Meryl Streep laying out statements to highlight why women have struggled to make film titles due to the high ratio of predominantly male studio managers ruling the last 60 years. Studying history, from the silent era all the way to 21st Century, I wanted to create a platform that not only highlighted films directed, made, and created by women but gave opportunities to marginalise equality behind the camera. I’ve interviewed female cinematographers, DOP’s, and directors who’ve started out as runners and made it to win awards.

'It's Not That Boring' is dedicated to supporting women within the film industry. In 2018 I witnessed a revolutionary documentary called 'This Changes Everything' featuring celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, and Meryl Streep laying out statements to highlight why women have struggled to make film titles due to the high ratio of predominantly male studio managers ruling the last 60 years. Studying the history, from the silent era all the way to the 21st Century, I wanted to create a platform that not only highlighted films directed, made, and created by women but gave opportunities to marginalise equality behind the camera. I’ve interviewed female cinematographers, DOP’s, and directors who’ve started out as runners and made it to win awards.

The times are changing, and this year (2021) for the first time in history we’ve seen two females nominated for directing at the Oscars. My aim is to help support and fight this movement, to tell stories by women of colour, lesbian women, and trans people, so there's an equal balance of stories shining a brighter future for our next generation. The website posts film reviews, interviews creatives and showcases movies to engage with that week.

Join our growing community so we can help balance out equality in film and ultimately spread awareness about incredible indie projects. Thanks for all your support, in this together."
